The Event Calendar Widget, for paid subscribers, lets you pull events from your region's public Culturalyst calendar onto your own website. You control exactly which events flow through, how the widget looks, and where it's allowed to appear.
Step 1: Access the Event Calendar Panel
Log in to your Culturalyst account.
Look for Event Calendar in your side navigation and click through to it.
Don't see it? Reach out to [email protected] and we'll get it enabled for you.
The panel has three sections: Curate Events (choosing which events appear), Settings (customizing the widget and grabbing your embed code), and Analytics (visitor data, available once your widget is live).
Step 2: Set Your Automatic Event Rules
Start in Settings so the system does as much work for you as possible before you begin reviewing events by hand.
Calendar Title: Optional. If you add one, it displays at the top of your widget. If you leave it blank, no title appears. Be sure to click Save Title after any change.
Whitelist All Events: Pulls every public event from your region's at-large calendar into your widget. Best for partners who want everything. You can still deselect individual events later. Note that turning this on hides the organization and artist options below, since they're no longer needed.
Region: Determines which city calendars your events come from. Some partners pull from more than one (for example, both Dallas and Fort Worth). This is configured on our end â if the regions look wrong, contact Culturalyst.
Automatically Add to Your Calendar: Choose trusted sources whose events flow through without review:
Your own organization's events are always included by default.
Additional Organizations: Search and select other organizations you work with consistently.
Artists: Search artists by name to pull their events in automatically.
Click Save Changes after adding organizations or artists.
Step 3: Curate Your Events
Return to the Curate Events section to review everything individually. Events are sorted into three tabs:
Unreviewed: Events from the at-large calendar you haven't made a decision on yet.
Added: Events that will appear on your widget. Anything pulled in by your Step 2 rules carries an Auto Added tag, so you can tell it apart from events you selected manually.
Ignored: Events you've passed on, kept here so you know what you've already reviewed.
From here you can:
Add an event manually from the Unreviewed grid.
Remove an event you've changed your mind about â it returns to Unreviewed.
Ignore an event to clear it from your queue without adding it.
To work through a long list faster, use the filters at the top to search by event title, narrow to a specific region, or filter by discipline (theater, performing arts, and so on).
Step 4: Preview and Customize Your Widget
Click Preview to see your widget exactly as visitors will see it.
Default View: Choose whether the widget opens in List view or Calendar view.
Default Filters: Restrict what the public sees without changing your curated list. For example, during a theater week you could show only live dance and theater performances, then open it back up afterward. You can also set defaults by genre or event creator.
Colors: Adjust your secondary and accent colors to match your site.
Click Save Changes after each adjustment.
Step 5: Add Approved Domains and Embed the Widget
Enter the URLs where the widget is allowed to appear, without http:// or https:// (for example,
culturalyst.comandwww.culturalyst.com). The widget won't display on any domain you haven't approved.Copy the embed code and paste it into your site.
Click Save Changes.
Once the embed code is in place, you never need to copy or re-paste it again. Any future changes to your events, colors, filters, or view settings update automatically in the live widget.
Step 6: Take Your Calendar Live
Click to take your calendar live.
Once live, the Analytics section begins collecting data on how many people are viewing and using your widget.
Additional Tips
Rotate Embed URL: A safety mechanism for when you want to revoke access to your widget. Say you shared your embed code with a partner and approved their domain, then later decided you no longer want it on their site. Rotating the embed URL shuts down the old iframe everywhere it appears and issues you a new one. Most partners will never need this, but it's there if something comes up.
Approved domains are your first line of defense. Even without rotating, your widget will not render on any domain you haven't added to your approved list.
Editing anytime: All of your settings, filters, and curated events can be changed after you go live. Nothing is locked in.
Congratulations! Your event calendar widget is set up and live on your site.
